Ana Néri
Ana Néri is generally considered the first nurse of Brazil. When her sons were drafted for the Paraguay War in 1865, she wrote to the governor of Bahia and volunteered to serve on the front lines. Néri used her own funds to found a nursing facility in the capital of Paraguay during the war, and received numerous accolades when the fighting was over.
