James McCune Smith
In the deeply segregated New York City of the 1850s, James McCune Smith became the first Black man to own his own pharmacy. He also opened his own medical practice, treating Black and white patients alike. An abolitionist, Smith did a great deal to refute racist beliefs in certain fundamental differences between Black and white people, and so much more.
